This is ridiculous. Amazing and ridiculous. So the highest grossing movie of all time is the Titanic. Domestically, it grossed over $600,000,000 dollars. The funny thing is, it made a lot of this money much after opening weekend. The Dark Knight, now 18 days old, has already hit $400,000,000. It is the fastest to do so, breaking the record of Shrek 2 by a whopping 25 days. It now is sitting pretty at 8th all time. What's even more ridiculous, is that if you adjust for inflation, the Titanic is 6th all time, at $900,000,000 and the Dark Knight is all the way down at 61. Number 1? Gone With the Wind at 1.4 billion dollars. How much did it make at the time? $198,000,000. So over the course of 79 years, the dollar has now become 1/8th of what it once was. Well that's according to
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm . But if you go to
http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl , this website will tell you that 1 dollar in 1939 is now worth almost 16 dollars. That's half as much as the first website assumes. How have we fallen so far?
